The Story

Imagine being a teenage wizard who has lost his parents in a dangerous magical realm. Cliché, I know, but it doesn't end there. Your only chance to find them hinges on facing and defeating a ferocious dragon in an annual test organized by your city.
But there's a catch:

Your magical range is no more extensive than two pens stuck together, making the test seem nearly impossible. Not the best situation, right? Now, imagine one day you discover a unique type of magic, tailored specifically for you, one that unlocks your full potential. That might change everything. Well, in that scenario, you might be me.

But I must warn you, along with this newfound power, you'd also inherit my ill-timed sense of humor and the unfortunate twist of becoming the city's most wanted man on that very same day.

My name is Alan Ares Johnson, and this is my story.

Book Cover

This fantasy book is a refreshing take on the typical underdog story, avoiding fantasy clichés and instead delivering well-paced twists that keep the reader entertained with a mix of humor, action, embarrassing situations, and gravity. The initial plot may seem familiar, but this book quickly stands out as it playfully subverts expectations and keeps the reader engaged until the very end.

Quotes from the book

Going on a suicide mission against Michael and flirting with a woman, are two really different things. One requires years of training, a quick mind and a complete lack of self-preservation. The other just requires Michael.

Have you ever had this one day when everything goes exactly as planned? Me neither.

We all have this glorious moment in our life where we shine by our outfit as much as by our actions. This moment when each seam of your costume perfectly highlights the extent of your capacities, when your rank shines through the details of the linings and when the colors mirror your function. Everyone is looking at you, knowing that you either accomplished something great, or are about to. Well, that wasn't the case for me because all I wore was my underwear and a quickly assembled cloth mask around my face.

Reviews

star star star star star Exciting, entertaining, fun!

I basically swallowed this novel! From the first until the last page this book is full of excitement and pure entertainment. You don’t only get wonderful emotional parts but also pure action and super funny moments. I don’t think I have ever laughed or chuckled as much reading a fantasy novel than with this one. The action parts left me with a high heartrate and accelerated my reading speed as well.

The author created protagonists with whom you can relate, he spans the story with lots of wit and thoughtfulness.

Overall 10/10 recommendation. Can’t wait for the second book!

star star star star star Really well written, hilarious, makes the time fly. I laughed out loud reading it.

As a Harry Potter fan I love its closeness to it and I appreciate the realistic approach to magic (kind of ironic to write this). The way of telling the story is super engaging. I love the humor in all the details. I will read it multiple times.

About the Author

I grew up in the French Caribbean before moving to mainland France for my studies, and eventually found myself living in Germany. Along the way, I spent years traveling through European cities, fascinated by the variety of cultures I encountered. Today, I enjoy the safety, beauty, and rich cultural heritage of Munich, a city I now call home.

Fantasy has long been my favorite genre—so much so that I’m rarely without a book open on my phone. Coming from a Caribbean background, I’ve always been intrigued by the ways culture, tradition, and even language shape daily life. That same curiosity naturally spills into my writing.

World-building has been one of the most exciting parts of creating The Red Mage. I loved exploring how culture, technology, and tradition intertwine in the distant city of Aklantis. For example, what does it mean for a society when 80% of its population wields magic? How does that affect their homes, their work, or the rhythm of everyday life? The answers to those questions await you in the story.

What inspired the series

There are three main inspirations for this series that eventually intertwined: a certain frustration with “classical fantasy,” an irritation with some aspects of Harry Potter, and… Deadpool.

I’ve read fantasy novels for years and, while many of them are set in wonderfully original worlds, too often they recycle the same clichés: magic as a rare privilege, the hero secretly being the illegitimate child of royalty, elves displaying open and unapologetic racism, and of course dragons—always powerful, always dangerous, but usually a bit too romanticized for my taste. So I thought: why not turn these clichés upside down? In my world, the famously lost city lies in the desert instead of under the sea. Eighty percent of the population has access to magic, and disparities in magical power are uncommon and not tied to nobility. And yes—dragons are jerks.

As for Harry Potter, there’s no denying the importance and brilliance of the series. It accomplished exactly what it set out to do: a magical school adventure tailored to young readers. But it left me with one major frustration—the magic was never explained. That small irritation pushed me to create a magic system deeply rooted in science.

And then there’s Deadpool. I simply loved the idea of a character who isn’t always taken seriously and who cracks jokes in tense moments. That irreverent humor was something I delighted in reading—and writing. Of course, the Red Mage’s protagonist, Alan, is far from Deadpool in story, tone, and style of humor. He has a quieter, more self-conscious demeanor. But Deadpool definitely played a role in shaping him.

All of this merged into a story, a world, and a lore far removed from tired fantasy tropes—sprinkled with humor, awkward moments, and a protagonist who has a knack for stumbling into, and often winning, fights in the most embarrassing ways possible.
